Wai Khru - Respect for the Teacher

Wai Khru Ram Muay
Translated: Wai is Respect. Khru is Teacher. Ram is Dance. and Muay is Fighter.
Wai Khru Ram Muay is the dance of the fighter(s) to pay respect to their teacher(s).

The Ram Muay starts with the Nak Muay (fighter) kneeling in his corner. When the music starts, the figher will show the Wai (hands in front of face, palms facing each other). He will place one hand/glove to the ground in front of himself, then the other. He will lower his head to his hands/gloves then back up. This is done three times. This shows respect for his teacher, parents, and ancestors. Many believe it also includes Buddha (God) and the King. This simple act is meant to bring about auspiciousness and keeps the mind clear and mindful. It also serves as a form of stretching and warm-up before the fight.

The fighter will then rise up to one knee then up to both feet and the dance begins. The fighter will perform coreographed movements while circling the ring going to each corner, then bowing to pay respect. The movements and steps of the Ram Muay vary from camp to camp and region to region. The ceremony is performed to the soundtrack of Sarama, an unique rhythmic traditional Thai music that also accompanies the fights.

There are countless beautiful Wai Khrus out there, but this one is particularly special to our LMT Family. We're incredibly honored to have had the late Ajarn Sangtiennoi (below right in black shirt) as one of our teachers and to carry on this Wai Khru with his family.
